Farmed by a highly-specialized 7-person crew that has been there for decades, and with a seriously baffling diversity of blocks, and exposures, terraces, and soil-types, clones, old vines, just straight-up MIND-BOGGLING stuff!

And this 2013? Simply JAW-DROPPING – with that signature funk that would make George Clinton himself weak in the knees. Mostly Cabernet Sauvignon, clocking in at over half of the total blend, then rounded out with Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, and a splash of Petit Verdot. So yes, all FIVE of the traditional Bordeaux grapes, in a mix that is uniquely crafted to shape the identity as the FLAGSHIP of this singular estate and cult-worthy producer. This is a wine not built with critical scores in mind – and perhaps the real achievement is that it secures them all the same. I mean, 96 POINTS, people! It’s dark, and wild, savage, and sumptuous, with dried cherries, and cedar-y woodland duff, then meaty, savory goodness that is spiced with cinnamon, and clove, and cracked leather, molten dark chocolate, and heady, roasted herbs, with a lingering hay smoke character over all. It is such an intriguing and nuanced expression of Napa’s hillsides that you’d be hard pressed to compare it with almost any other Napa Cab today! I mean that in the best possible way, too – this is of a category all its own – and more easily referenced to old-school Bordeaux, or classic Rioja, and even some of the pioneering producers of Hermitage and top-notch Northern Rhône.

You might love it. You might prefer Napa’s more prototypical fruit/oak bombs.
